Case Study: How Tim Jackson Swapped a 7-Day Grind for a 3-Day Work Week
I've just spent the last week over in Menorca with my amazing wife, Beth, on a total chill-out holiday.
The grand plan for the week was to do literally sweet FA. No laptop, zero work, an occasional glass of rosé, and a goal to smash through at least three books.
And as I was laying there by the pool, successfully doing absolutely nothing, I started reflecting on our Dog Daycare Success Academy (DDSA) Immersion back at Lumley Castle.
It's been about a month since we descended on the castle for our "Content in the Castle" event with Stephen Inala-Reedy. While my brain is usually racing at 100 miles an hour during those weekends, being forced to sit still in the sunshine made me realize something pretty profound about the room we assembled.
These quarterly immersions aren't just about scribbling notes in a historic castle. Of course they also did a looooot of that, but they are also about building a business that gives you the freedom to actually step away.
This hit me that while I was sitting at the resort of Son Bou doing zero work, one of my long-time students, Tim Jackson, was probably doing the exact same thing back home.
Tim is the owner of Pets 2 Impress and the Dean of Enrichment University. We caught up with him for a quick chat at the castle to chat about our new high-impact "hot seat" format, but looking back at his footage while on holiday made me want to share his full story.
Because if you are currently working yourself into an early grave, Tim is the textbook example of how to escape the firefighting trap.
Here is how Tim went from a stressed-out, 7-day-a-week grind to running a fully booked destination daycare in just three days a week.
"I thought I was posting great content. Turns out I wasn't!"
As always with a DDSA event, you leave with a brain completely full of ideas and a notepad bursting at the seams. Tim was no exception. Despite being an absolute veteran in the pet industry, Tim discovered he still had room to level up.
"The big takeaway would probably be from Dom's guest speaker, Steven, who talked all about content and what sort of things we should be putting out there on our social media," Tim admitted. "Personally, I thought I was posting some great content. Turns out I wasn't! So, I've got a lot of work to do to change what I'm putting on there, but I'm super excited for it."
We also debuted our brand-new DDSA format, blending the high-energy teachings of a mini IMPACT event with our new breakaway "hot seats." Instead of the traditional 45 minutes of sitting in the hot seat, these fast-paced sessions kept everyone laser-focused.
According to Tim, it was a massive upgrade: "It really helps you to focus, and I found that probably more impactful than sitting for 45 minutes in a traditional hot seat. It's a great new format."
From the Brink of Failure to a Happy Bank Balance
It's easy to look at Tim now and see the success. He's a Veterinary Nurse, Canine Behaviourist, published author, and runs an award-winning, members-only daycare in the North East of England.
But just a few years ago, Tim was in a very dark place with his business.
He was overwhelmed, undervalued, and drowning in stress. His staff weren't motivated, and rising operational costs were eating his profits alive.
"I was working seven days a week, struggling to find time for myself or my family," Tim recalls. "Even though I had a team in place, I felt like all I did was put out fires every day. Our services were good, but not remarkable. I had tried everything from cutting costs to implementing new activities, but nothing was sticking. I was even in a position where I'd just had to let two members of staff leave, and I had to take on a second job just to be able to support my family. It was a really tough time."
When Tim first entered my world, he had very young children whom he barely saw because he was chained to the daycare 24/7.
Then, he made the decision to dive headfirst into the system. We worked together to implement the exact SOPs, protocols, and foundational systems that eventually became Enrichment University—putting wellness and structure at the core of his daily operations.
The transformation was absolute night and day.
"Well, from a business point of view, financially I'm making a lot more money, so the bank balance is a lot happier," Tim says. "Since being in Dom's world, I'm now at a stage where I work three days a week and that's if I want to. And that's not me being work-shy; I love working, but I don't have to be there. The daycare runs very well without me, thanks to the help Dom's given me with all the SOPs and protocols, making sure systems are in place so that I'm not needed there every single day."
Today, Pets 2 Impress is so fully booked that Tim regularly has to turn desperate clients away. He's been featured in the local media, become a local celebrity, and—most importantly—got his life back.
It's easy to hesitate. Tim did. When you're already struggling, investing in a program feels like a massive gamble.
"I remember thinking, 'What if this doesn't work? What if I just waste more time and money?'" Tim admits. "But then I asked myself—What if it does work? What if this is the turning point I've been waiting for? Thank God I took the leap. In a matter of weeks, everything turned around. My daycare was finally living up to its potential. My staff were more motivated, and our clients couldn't stop championing the changes."
As Tim puts it:
"I think there's not really a program like this anywhere else in the world. It's a great networking program because you're in a room with like-minded people who have the same struggles, who want the best for their business, but also want you to achieve as well. Anyone that's thinking about signing up to the DDSA, just do it. Yes, it's a commitment, but it's a commitment that's going to better your lifestyle and better your business."
